Symfonium for Android TV (Experimental Build)

Symfonium for Android TV (Experimental Build)

As part of the ongoing efforts to improve Symfonium and explore new platforms, I’m sharing an experimental build of Symfonium for Android TV. Please note that these builds are not yet optimized for TV, but they are provided here for convenience for those who want to try it out.

Important Notes

  • The interface and navigation are not fully adapted for Android TV.
  • This is an experimental build, and some features may not work correctly with a D-Pad or remote.
  • Play Store review team is a pain, so the build won’t be published on Play Store anytime soon.
  • Please share feedback about anything that does not work properly with the D-Pad so I can work on improving these in future releases.

How to Sideload the APK on Android TV

If you’re new to sideloading apps on Android TV, here’s a quick guide:

  1. Download the APK attached to this post (scroll down for the download link).
  2. Transfer the APK to your Android TV using one of the following methods:
  • USB Drive: Copy the APK to a USB drive and connect it to your Android TV.
  • File Transfer Apps: Use apps like Send Files to TV to transfer the APK from your phone or computer.
  1. On your Android TV, enable Unknown Sources:
  • Go to Settings > Device Preferences > Security & Restrictions > Unknown Sources.
  • Allow the file manager or app you’ll use to install the APK.
  1. Use a file manager (like X-plore File Manager) to locate and open the APK file.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the app.

Known Issues

  • This build is not optimized for remote or D-Pad navigation yet.
  • Some UI elements may not display correctly or be fully accessible.

Your Feedback Matters!

Please report any issues you encounter, especially if something doesn’t work well with the D-Pad. Your input will help make Symfonium better for Android TV in the future.

Feel free to reply to this thread with your feedback or suggestions.

Hi,

I installed this APK on my TV today. The only issue I have is that the “Cursor” gets stuck on the volume slider as soon as I try to change the volume, when using the remote. There is apparently no way to go from there other than to force close the app. Everything else seems to work just fine.

It’s great that you try to bring this awesome App to Android TV as well, expanding your user base.

Kind regards

Chris

Can you make a video so I can see exactly how to repro ?

Thanks for the quick response, I’ll do that, might take some time though, cause I suffer from a tremor

Sorry for the shaky vids, hope they are still somewhat useful…

Another Idea that came to my mind was to go for a numeric volume indicator instead of a slider…

What are these icons called so I can put them up top or something?
The is the exp android TV build with large tablet mode. Is this the view that is recommended for TV?

Thanks :folded_hands:

There’s currently no style pre built for TV. But Large tablet is probably not a good one.

You can configure everything in now playing landscape with preview. This is the bottom bar.

Will see to have a simple working style as a starter.

What theme are you using and any other tweaks can you recommend for TV navigation? I can’t find one that allows me to use my remote to get to the previous or next track buttons.

Hey, you are really on to something special here. I’m a bit of an audiophile and have a lot of 5.1 & Atmos mixes I like to play in the home theater. Gapless playback of Dolby stuff is almost impossible unless using a single file and cue sheet. That is until now! Symfonium is the the only app I have found that can use my remote library and get gapless playback of Dolby Atmos and eac3 encoded content on my Nvidia Shield. It may work on other Andriod TV devices but have not tried any others. I really hope you bring a full tv version to market. The tech you are using to pass the bitstream is flawless. I think Nvidia still needs to work on better decoders as I do get micro stutters after a really long listening session and it seems only a restart of the device fixes it. That’s not Synfoniums problem because Kodi suffers the same. Kodi will also play gapless but i find it clunky and my remote music server is Jellyfin because Plex will downmix anything that doesn’t have video. So, integrating a remote server with Kodi is not fun. Even with passthrough, Plex found a way to only serve stereo streams. I know the 5.1 music market is kinda niche but we are here and usually have money for anything that makes music go boom. Keep up the good work and make sure people know Symfonium can play gapless Dolby Atmos albums. Iwould have already posted something on Reddit but the TV control has a lot of work needed, as you know. Thanks!
