NPS background disables Primary color

App version

Issue description

I know the color handling can be complicated so I wanted to ask if the following is intended behavior.

With Adaptive Primary color disabled, some NPS background types force the use of a different color in the Primary slot.

Pics below will show more clearly but essentially I am seeing “onSurface” color instead of “Primary”. This “onSurface” color may also be forced to white–which is not in the theme.

Steps to reproduce

Disable any adaptive colors, set some NPS elements to use Primary color and others to use Default color.

Change Background style and notice difference in colors

Four affected backgrounds (pairs behave the same):

  • Solid adaptive color & Blur
  • Animated glow & Album art

Additional information

Pic 1: “Solid theme surface” background. Uses correct colors in all slots. Any background style not mentioned uses these colors correctly

Pic 2: Animated glow & Album art. “onSurface” color (yellow) has replaced the Primary color

Pic 3: Solid adaptive color & Blur. Same behavior as Pic 2 but “onSurface” itself has also been changed to white for most elements.

White is not in any color slot and device is set to Dark mode. Same behavior across multiple Album Arts, including lighter and darker ones.

Pic 4: Adaptive primary color works correctly in all cases, though “Default” color may still change.

If it helps narrow things down, it seems like the app is just using the wrong color option.

Like in the above case, where Blur background forces white text? I just noticed that the text actually changes from white to black depending on the album art brightness.

So it’s literally just using “Default” color option instead of “Primary.”
