Allow more than 512GB for rolling cache. I’m considering getting a 2TB SD card, and would want to be able to use the whole thing for rolling cache. Currently, it appears to be limited to a max of 512GB for rolling cache.
Not sure if the solution is to simply raise that limit, or to implement something that is based upon the size of storage available. that could end up being more complex than it’s worth to implement.
Problem solved:
Allow usage of larger storage devices for rolling cache.
Additional description and context:
I just like using the rolling cache, rather than moving things to the permanent cache.
(also, the wizard isn’t working for some reason… just had me edit the template forum post)
512 GB or 2TB of random music does not change anything it’s still way too much data that you might need but it’s still completely random music that may or may not have what you want to listen.
You are not solving anything with more random data, if 512 is not enough then 2048 won’t be enough either and your solution is something else.
Wait, what do you mean? I don’t understand why it would be random music or cause problems. The way I use it is to automatically save playback cache to rolling cache, so when I play an album it automatically caches offline for playback away from an internet connection (for listening again later), or when I manually cache an album I add it to the rolling cache.
I don’t have the media provider set to automatically download cache, if that’s what you mean. Basically, I just want to be able to fill my SD card with music as I play it… that shouldn’t cause problems, right? (it hasn’t so far with the 512GB card, it’s just pretty much full and I’d like to add some live Grateful Dead shows that there isn’t room for currently )
It’s a rolling cache by definition you don’t control what’s in it since data is removed when no more space.
So it’s basically random data in it as once you reached the full value, the rest is more or less random.
You don’t see it random but your example clearly prove the issue .
I’d like to add some live Grateful Dead shows
You will had that, and then at some point it will be deleted,
that there isn’t room for currently
The issue is just delayed if you want something to be there when you can to listen to it, rolling cache is not the solution.
So even at 10 TB if you library is 11TB you won’t be able to ensure that those music will be there when you want them.
So what you describe is that you want some specific things to be present and permanent cache is there for that and not size restricted.
Ok, I see what you’re saying. I was under the impression that it operated on a strict first in-first out kind of situation, so if I over fill it, it would remove the oldest music in the cache. I assumed that it would take full albums out at a time, but it makes sense that it wouldn’t work like that.
However, I do have a smart playlist based upon partially cached albums that appears at the top of my home page when there’s relevant material. So, I think that should at least alert me to when data starts getting removed and leaves incompletely cached albums behind (which I can manually remove the remaining tracks or re-cache manually).
Perhaps I should just move things to the permanent cache, but I guess we’ll see how it goes. I can always shrink the rolling cache back down to a “sane” value and do that. I just like the idea of the zero effort maintaining a local cache, and it makes sense that if I put something in the cache 6 months ago it would be removed for something going in today.
That can be easily achieved by other means, like through provider autocache or smart playlist autocache… and you have more control then. E.g. I use two smart playlists to autocache from two different providers in different qualities. You simply have more control over it then. But if you are happy with the solution I do not want to urge you to go otherwise - as long as you can convince Tolriq to upgrade the max cache size
I guess you are caching at original quality and do not transcode? Otherwise > 512 GB would mean a quite large collection.
Correct, mostly CD quality FLACs, but some higher res as well.
Overall, it sounds like it will work about how I expected it to work. Personally, I don’t see that being an issue for the way I use it. The dire-sounding warning just had me thinking I had overlooked something major
It sounds like he’s willing to make the change for me, and if I run into issues it’s obviously my fault and I’ll make lifestyle changes as needed.
