Symfonium + Jellyfin hacks

Share helpful tips for Jellyfin users that also use Symfonium

I’ll kick things off with one that is obvious in retrospect, but it took months for me to realize: Editing playlists in Symfonium can be tricky, especially the longer playlists. Instead, use a jellyfin desktop clients, and then you can just import the updated playlist to Symfonium.

Personally I’m fond of Feishin, but I think this capability is present in all jellyfin clients

Another hack is using the smartlist plugin on my server. Among many features, it can create playlists based on folder path.

My unsolicited workflow:

  1. Create folder paths for specific themes (ie electro/ funk/ and DJ Sets/)
  2. Set up Smart Playlist with playlists that watch these folder paths
  3. Install Shortwave to listen to online radio (and auto-record songs).
  4. Edit the Shortwave config so that it saves files in my Jellyfin music folder. (NFS/SMB + .automountfile if Jellyfin is on a separate server)
  5. Now, when you tell Shortwave you want to save a song, it will push it to your Jellyfin music folder automatically
  6. Here I manually move the song to the relevant folder ie funk/
  7. Jellyfin updates the playlist automatically and Symfonium updates the playlist automatically. No need for any further intervention.
