Smart Playlist - Anyone figure out random daily playlists?

I’ve been using a smart playlist to download random songs from my library each day. But I’ve noticed that it just repeats the same songs in a specific order every second day. Has anyone made a working setup for this that’s actually random?

My Setup
Last Played is over 1 day
OR
Last Played is missing

This results in the songs being the same every second day. I’ve also changed the last played number to 2, which just made the songs repeat every third day.

Anyone have a working setup?

Did you set “Sort by” to “Random”? That should give you a “different” list of tracks each time the playlist is refreshed. You can also enter a value for “Max item count” if you want to keep this playlist small instead of it including most of your library

Yeah, I tried both the stable and regular random option as well as a max song count. That does result in ‘random’ songs, but they just repeat every two days. And I definitely have more songs in my library, it just never uses them in the playlist. It’s quite odd.

Does the playlist ever have any songs that aren’t already downloaded? Maybe it’s only using the stuff already available.

I know this topic has come up before but I’d have to do some searching to find it. I’ll post a link later if I do find it.

The playlist has a download rule linked to it, but otherwise I don’t have any permanently downloaded music. They are downloaded from the server each day.

And thanks, that’d be a big help. I did have a look before posting but couldn’t find much, only a post reccomending the setup I currently have now.

Which is a little surprising, I thought that would be the main use of smart playlists.

It seems like its using the same seed or something every time it adds songs. I’ve changed over to Navidrome’s own smart playlists with the same rules and they work as expected. Should I file a report? I’m just not sure what to do to replicate the issue in logs.

It’s definitely weird. As I said: with local media only, “Random” sort gives a differently ordered list every time I open the playlist. I don’t know enough to guess why it doesn’t do that in your case.

If you wanted to send a report, a basic log would probably just have you opening this playlist on Day 2 (when the order is the same). If they need something more specific, they’ll let you know.

For bonus points, you could probably do the following for logs:

  1. make a non-Smart copy of the playlist on Day 2
  2. delete the Smart Playlist and make it again with the same filters
  3. open both playlists to confirm that the order is the same
