Recommendations for Virtual server source?

Hi all, recently switched from Subsonic (server and client) to Symfonium (reading directly from Google Drive) and I’m loving the level of customization.

There are some issues that could be solved by not reading from Google Drive and using a server instead (like Subsonic). But right now (and likely for a year), I’m moving a lot between short term accomms.

This means I can’t host Subsonic on a NAS or laptop like I used to do. I can’t forward ports from the ISP etc.

Instead, I was thinking about hosting a virtual machine online that pulls files from GDrive, runs Subsonic and then feeds my client with no physical infrastructure.

Is anyone doing this? Any tips? I tried looking for windows machines that run remotely with ~500GB or storage, but a) they’re pretty expensive at $100/m, and b) I’m not sure if port forwarding will work like it should. Since I’m already paying Google Drive for storage, is there a cost efficient way to use GCP? Or would I need to use GCS? I don’t want this getting too complex.

The time/effort/cost is probably even manageable if I can be sure it works. But if anyone has done all this before and has tips that would be way more efficient! Thanks for reading and any ideas.

rent a cheap vps, mount your gdrive with rclone and point your server to that mount location.

Thanks, I ended up doing just that. $150/year with 1tb of storage. I’d recommend it if anyone is in the same boat.

The hard part now is finding a client to replace dsub since it’s not working too well on my new phone and symfonium doesn’t have folder view browsing.

Symfonium have folder view browsing …

Hey thanks for the reply. I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding or missing something but all the threads I’ve seen suggest that viewing by folder (where the first layer is the artist, like DSub) is not supported? If it’s possible, how do I turn it on?

For example, I have all my music sorted by artist → album → song. In Dsub with folder view, I get one folder for Sondre Lerche (random example). In Symfonium, I get seven or eight due to collabs which makes the list messy.

I know I should clean up tags etc. but with thousands of albums it’s a lot, especially if folder view just works. Again apologies if I’m missing something, but threads like this suggested it wasn’t available: Folder view for Subsonic - Feature requests - Symfonium support

This is 3 years old … Go to files in the library to use file mode.

Ah very cool, thank you! Will play around with this.
