Queue Management / AlbumArt / Search

Feature description

Hi,

Would buy this versatile app, but there are three things that it needs to do better.

I have a lot of offline mp3s. I use my phone as a map/mp3 player (no Android Auto, just the phone).

In order for this to work well I need to quickly be able to jump between nav/queue and now playing screen + search.

Therefore please add an gesture swipe up/swipe down to quickly open/close the active queue. Pressing the tiny queue button at the top of now playing is hard when driving.

Also the queue management itself is overcluttered with many graphical elements. Make the queue editable only when user wants to do so via a toggle. Otherwise queue is great at quickly finding a new random song in the current list without searching for one specifically.

  • Please add search as an option for double tap/long hold on album art.

  • AlbumArt does not register well if I have multiple files with the same Album Name but from different artists. Each file has a image embedded, but if this happens then all files with the same album title get the first file’s album art. There should be an option to force albumart retrieval from each file.

Problem solved

You guys are overdoing it with all of these fields that you ask users to fill in order to raise a feature request.

Brought benefits

It would provide a way better UX.

Other application solutions

Look at BlackPlayer queue management. They do it well.

I searched existing feature requests

And yet here we are with tons of completely unrelated stuff mixed despite the very clear instructions

It’s here for a reason and efficiency, ignoring that is just time lost for every one …

There’s already a gesture for the queue and everything is configurable…

There’s duplicated request and there’s already an option to prefer track art so no idea what you mean with your album issue.

TL;DR; open a proper issue for the album cover issue.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick message back. I’ll refrain from being sarcastic. There truly are too many options (in a positive way) in the app and the feature/bug listing here is also exhausting :). So I’ll just quote below and add some screenshots / mock-ups to keep things productive.

Therefore please add an gesture swipe up/swipe down to quickly open/close the active queue. Pressing the tiny queue button at the top of now playing is hard when driving.

I found the swipe up gesture setting (it’s not next to the double tap / long press - maybe group them together). And it does open the queue, but unfortunately sometimes it also registers the other gestures such as next track (horizontal swipe) or just tap/pause when doing so. So because of this when I swipe up I also sometimes either pause playback or jump to the next song. Maybe you can look into the sensitivity of the swipe up gesture or priority vs. the swipe left/right and tap. I added a button to open the queue ad-interim.

Also the queue management itself is overcluttered with many graphical elements. Make the queue editable only when user wants to do so via a toggle. Otherwise queue is great at quickly finding a new random song in the current list without searching for one specifically.

Sidenote: I also noticed a glitch, when disabling the additional track information for lists (default is indeed duration), duration still appears in the queue list, but next to the artist name now.

I also made you a simple mockup (last screen on the right) with a cleaner GUI for the queue. You can add the white equals(move item symbol) when user long presses an item. You can also remove the three dots as they are not necessary (long press does the same thing). The equals should disappear again after double back (1 back to close the mini menu from long press, 2nd back to make the move equals disappear). Maybe also move the clear queue floating button next to the smart radio one. + there is a small white dot at the end of the mini-track progress bar.. for some reason). You can also play with the borders since the extra elements are gone now.

Please add search as an option for double tap/long hold on album art.

Here I tried to add it from double tap or via a button, but there is no search media library option.

AlbumArt does not register well if I have multiple files with the same Album Name but from different artists. Each file has a image embedded, but if this happens then all files with the same album title get the first file’s album art. There should be an option to force albumart retrieval from each file.

This one you were also right, there is an option to prefer embedded art if I select the media library and (big AND) resync. Oddly a sync was queued, but it was not triggering. I force closed the app process and ran it again and it synced automatically this time. Before setting the “Prefer track thumbnail” it randomly picked a file (probably the first it found with that album name) and used that AlbumArt for all other files that had the same album name.

Thanks. App looks cool. I can make it super minimalistic. I like that aspect.

I see in your screenshots you have just Library + Now Playing buttons at the bottom for navigation. Why not just add Search to these buttons, and then it will always be visible for you to tap and search when you’re playing something?

Settings > Interface > Navigation and Media start > Main navigation entries

I have a lot of offline mp3s. I use my phone as a map/mp3 player (no Android Auto, just the phone).

The buttons are too tiny to use while having the phone on a stand while driving. If the swipe-up gesture for queue wouldn’t also trigger the swipe left/tap or if double tap on the album art would open the search it would a lot easier to manage the app while in a non Android Auto car.

What you say (extra nav button) is somewhat better than having the search as a dedicated button in the library view (what I added), but I think UX can still be improved if these options were available (the swipe up fix + search on double tap and/or hold on albumart).

Sidenote: TBH I’d put for HOLD on the albumart the details view.. if such an option were available. wink, wink.

Swipe up on the player, not on the cover art. (The left/right gestures only work on the cover. Swipe up works anywhere on NPS.)

“Track information” is already available for long-press on cover

Or did you mean you’d put the Queue details? In which case yeah, that’s not available

Oh yeah. Swipe up works even if you start to swipe over the (at least on my set-up) play/pause button. Not intuitive.. but thanks. It’s more natural to swipe the albumart, at least for me, and I think I’m not alone in this. I’ve been using BlackPlayer for ages.. that’s how the GUI worked there and it was just fine.

Exiting the queue is also a bit weird. You have to scroll to the top of the queue and then swipe down or press the little “up next” button or do a back (last two work without scrolling to top of the queue). I think it would be useful if the swipe down can be initiated in the “up next / track list” area even without being at the top of long queue (without the need to scroll to the top of it).

  • In the “More Actions” menu the “Track information” is marked as “Details” so I was looking for that. That was also a bit confusing. Thanks for the tip.

Speaking of BlackPlayer.. another thing it did well was that after you clicked a search result the search view would close and you would be redirected to now playing. That would also be nice for Symfonium - would make the GUI feel more responsive.
