Feature description:
Add an option to handle compilation albums differently. Tracks from compilations (e.g., NOW That’s What I Call Music) should be shown as singles under their artist name (with original single/album artwork) instead of grouped under the compilation. Full artist albums should remain grouped normally.
Problem solved:
What problem does it solve?
Currently, tracks from compilation albums are grouped under the compilation name (e.g., NOW 78), which scatters an artist’s songs across multiple albums and clutters the library. Treating these as singles with original artist and artwork keeps the library clean and makes browsing by artist or album much easier.
Brought benefits:
It makes the music library cleaner and easier to browse — compilation tracks appear as singles with proper artist names and artwork, while full albums stay grouped together. This avoids clutter from “NOW” or “Greatest Hits” albums and gives a more organized, artist-focused experience.
Other application solutions:
Apps like MusicBrainz Picard and some desktop tag editors solve this by identifying compilation albums (e.g., albumartist = Various Artists) and either stripping the album tag or replacing it with the track’s original album or single information. This approach works well but is manual, adding an automated toggle in Synfomia would make it seamless for mobile users.
Additional description and context:
My library includes 200GB of music, with many songs coming from compilation albums (NOW That’s What I Call Music).
Currently, these tracks are grouped under the compilation or various artists instead of by individual artist, which makes browsing difficult.
The ideal solution would:
-
Detect compilations (e.g., Various Artists)
-
Treat these tracks as singles, showing artist – title with original single artwork
-
Keep proper full artist albums grouped normally
This makes mixed libraries (mainstream + festival/alternative artists) clean and easy to browse.
