LDAC adaptative saccads

Issue description

I’m experiencing recurring audio stuttering in Symfonium when using Bluetooth with LDAC at 990 kbps.
The issue only occurs while Symfonium is displayed in the foreground. As soon as I minimize the app, switch to another app, or turn the screen off, playback becomes perfectly smooth. The stuttering occurs regardless of which Symfonium screen/page is displayed.
I tested several LDAC Bluetooth devices with the same result. At 660 kbps, the issue completely disappears.
Other audio players can play the exact same files over LDAC at 990 kbps without any stuttering on the same phone, so the issue appears to be specific to Symfonium when running in the foreground.

LDAC Issue

Thank you for the detailed comparison. I found a log upload under your name from 15.0.1, but it starts with playback already running and doesn’t identify the LDAC setting or the exact stutter times.

Please update to production 15.1.0 and try again. Read the release notes and APK instructions; if Google Play has not approved that release yet, the announcement explains how to get the official APK.

If it persists, please capture fresh debug logs. Enable debug mode before starting a track at 990 kbps, reproduce the stutter with Symfonium visible, switch to another app, then return to Symfonium. A brief comparison at 660 kbps would also help. Disable debug mode and upload promptly.

Reply with your app version, Bluetooth device model, upload description, and the times when stuttering starts and stops, including your timezone, so I can correlate them with the logs.

Also try to capture a full bug report https://developer.android.com/studio/debug/bug-report after it stutter then upload it to https://upload.symfonium.app

First of all, thank you for the very quick response! :folded_hands:t2:
Done. I updated to the latest version and reproduced the issue after enabling debug mode before starting playback.
At 1:30 into the track, I went into Android Developer Options and switched LDAC to 660 kbps. When I returned to Symfonium, the stuttering was gone, as always.
If I switch back to adaptive bitrate or 990 kbps, the stuttering immediately returns whenever Symfonium is displayed on screen, regardless of which page is open. It immediately stops as soon as I turn the screen off or switch to another app.
This issue does not occur with other audio players.
I’ve actually had this problem for years, even after changing phones, and with several different Bluetooth receivers using different chipsets, including Cirrus Logic and ESS. No occurs with AptXHD…

Thank you, I found your new 15.1.0 logs. Playback starts normally and remains active when you switch away from Symfonium and return. I don’t see a logged playback error or audio underrun, so these logs don’t yet identify what causes the audible stutter.

I couldn’t find the full Android bug report. If you already uploaded it, please give me its upload description. Otherwise, please capture a full bug report immediately after reproducing the stutter at 990 kbps with Symfonium visible, then upload it to https://upload.symfonium.app. Please include the Bluetooth receiver model and the exact time of the stutter and switch to 660 kbps, including your timezone, so I can correlate the system audio/Bluetooth information.

One usual reason is that Symfonium can send higher res audio that most apps. You can also just try to force the output to 44.1kz on output settings.

Thank you, Tolriq :folded_hands:t2:
I generated and uploaded the full Android bug report under the conditions you described.
I’ve already tested forcing the output to 44.1 kHz, but unfortunately it makes no difference.
However, I tested a third LDAC Bluetooth receiver, and surprisingly, the issue does not occur with this one! :person_shrugging:

-1Mii DS220 (QCC5125 Bluetooth chip): no problem
-Qudelix 5K (QCC5124 Bluetooth chip): stuttering
-RodRain 5.0 Pro (CSR8675 Bluetooth chip): stuttering

Thank you, the receiver comparison helps. Your 15.1.0 app log already shows 44.1 kHz output, but it doesn’t identify what causes the stutter.

I noticed PEQ is enabled with a −10.45 dB preamp even though all its bands are disabled. Please lower the volume first, then temporarily disable PEQ completely, restart the same track at 990 kbps on an affected receiver, and check whether it still stutters with Symfonium visible.

I found your bug-report ZIP. Please also upload the main bug-report .txt from inside it to https://upload.symfonium.app, and tell me which receiver you used and the exact stutter and bitrate-switch times, including your timezone. This will help me correlate the system audio/Bluetooth events.

Sorry, I think I may have wasted some of your time. Apparently, this is a known issue that isn’t directly related to Symfonium, and it disappears when Wi-Fi is turned off…
That doesn’t necessarily explain all the correlations I’ve noticed, though, and I honestly can’t remember whether Wi-Fi was on or off each time the issue occurred with the different Bluetooth receivers I tested… :person_shrugging:
I’ll investigate in that direction from now on.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look into this anyway, and for your incredibly quick responses! :folded_hands:t2:
And thank you as well for your absolutely amazing app, which has completely transformed my smartphone audio experience!
