Issues connecting with my external Emby hostname

Issue description:

Hi,

I’m able to connect with my Emby server from inside my home network. However, I’m unable to connect to it externally. I’ve sent the logs. I’m evaluating Symfonium to see if it will work as a replacement for the Emby mobile app. I’ve searched these forums to no avail. Using the same settings as I use to connect with a web browser and also the Emby Android App

Using the Symfonium Android app, version 12.3.0 (127402).

Thanks

SG

What you are doing is not very clear from the logs.

You are adding the host with the private lan ip.

Please better describe how you configure things and what you do.

Update:

Looked at the first set of logs, I couldn’t see any requests to the external server. I was trying to connect while not connect to my LAN so I connected to the LAN and was able to at least save the settings. So, I generated a new set up logs and submitted with the same identifier

Looking in the these new logs I see that you try and connect to the exernal host name and get at least one 200 response. I’m kind of stumped at this point, I’ll let you guys have a look see what’s what.

SG

I sent some new logs with the same ID.

Here’s what I did.

  1. Disconnect from my local network (turn wifi off)
  2. Attempt to add my external facing url to the existing profile of my emby server as the secondary server.
  3. Symfonium tries to connect to the lan address and fails, it never tries the external url.
  4. Because of the failure Symfonium can’t save.
  5. Sent the first log files after this testing.

After I send the log file I got the idea to try adding my Emby external facing url while connected to my LAN (wifi on).

  1. Connect to my local network (wifi on)
  2. Attempt to add my external facing url to the existing profile of my emby server as the secondary server.
  3. Saving is successful, now the secondary server fields are populated
  4. Play some music, music plays
  5. Disconnect wifi while the music is playing,
  6. Skip to the next song, song doesn’t play, try another song this one doesn’t play again
  7. Turn logging on again
  8. Try playing a song again, doesn’t work (the ui just keeps spinning around the play buttion)
  9. Send the new logs
  10. Looked in the logs, now I see the external facing url with 200’s in the next few lines following but music still won’t play. I’ve been fiddling trying to get a song since I submitted the logs and have not succeeded, wifi is off as I’m trying to play music from my external URL, haven’t been able to successfully play a song or connect from my external url / IP address so far.

I have my Emby server configured on the standard port with http. I have a dynamic hostname configured for the Emby server. I have tried both the host name and the ip address and haven’t been able to get a connection or play music via my external ip/host name in the app yet.

Also, I’m able to connect to my Emby server with the emby client and with a web browser over the external URL so I know I can connect to the server.

The feature that I’m after is I want to be able to listen to music on my phone as I move around and my phone goes from home Wi-Fi to data and then to external wifi without interrupting the listening.

Please let me know if there is any further way I can help, I’d love to help if I can. I can make new logs for you also.

Update: I rebooted my phone with the WiFi off and when it restarted I was able to connect to Emby Server and play music (wifi still off). Will be testing further.

Update: I’ve not been able to reproduce the problem with connecting or playback since I rebooted the phone. I tried closing the app, and starting with wifi on and wifi off. I’m going to use as normal for a day or do and then I’ll mark as solved once I’m satisfied. I appreciate the help on this. I think there is a bug in that I was not able to update the secondary server settings while not connected to my local LAN

This is not a bug as it’s documented  The first connection needs to be available for the checks. You can long press the top provider icon to save without checking.

And the change between primary and secondary can take some time, it’s usually best to have playback cache enabled to mitigate any network changes / issues.

LOL, I see it’s a feature! ROFL

I have to say I’m impressed by the app so far, trending to buying once the trial is over. The amount of work that’s gone into this app shows.

I’m still messing around with caching but so far so good.
