Feedback about USB DAC and Bit-Perfect playback support

App version

Beta

Issue description

I am happy that Symfonium finally supports Bit-Perfect playback through USB DACs and I want to provide my feedback with the two DACs I own.

I have a FiiO KA1 and a Hiby FC3 with Display.

With the Hiby DAC, playback seems to be good to go, I still haven’t experienced any issue so far but I’m having playback issues with the FiiO DAC, please see below.

Issue # 1:

DSD playback is not working with the FiiO DAC where the now playing screen shuts down as soon as it attempts to play the file and this seem to affect PCM playback as well where I can’t play anything no matter what I do. I uploaded a log to the server under my username, please let me know if it was received.

Issue # 2:

When I connect the DAC, a popup notification appears at the bottom of the screen asking what app I want to use when there is more than one app with USB DAC support, if I want, I can select Symfonium from that menu and it will open automatically.

However, there is an issue where the popup notification from the app also appears on top of the other menu and that should not happen, the only notification that should appears is the one at the bottom, you can see it on the attached screenshot.

The other issue is, if I dismiss the bottom notification and then open Symfonium, the popup notification never appears to get connected to the DAC, so I have to disconnect the DAC and re-connect it to try to get connected.

Therefore, this is the correct behavior:

  1. When I connect a DAC and the bottom notification appears, I should select Symfonium as the app I want to use.

  2. If I dismiss the bottom notification and then I open Symfonium, the notification to get connected should always popup.

  3. If I dismiss the popup notification when I open the app to get connected to the DAC, when I exit the app and return, the popup notification must appear again until I get connected.

  4. This is a feature request: There must be a notification at the bottom when the app gets connected successfully to the DAC, something like “Connection to the [DAC name] DAC successful”.

Issue # 3:

I wouldn’t call this an issue but an enhancement, it is related to the volume level control for the FiiO DAC. The FiiO DAC has a very loud volume level when I set it to maximum, however, with symfonium, the volume level seem to be limited to some degree, the problem is, I’ve been unable to test this thoroughly because of the issue # 1.

There’s no logs uploaded, the second screen is necessary if the permission is not granted and you selected exclusive, the third point is already handled to what each DAC supports. When connecting the volume is mapped to current Android volume to avoid volume change.

There’s no logs uploaded

For some reason it is not getting uploaded but I don’t see the way of attaching the log inside this window, can you please clarify?

the second screen is necessary if the permission is not granted and you selected exclusive

As I explained before, only the bottom popup notification should appear when there is more than one app with USB DAC support, the other notification should appear when I dismiss the bottom popup notification and open the app, but I see sometimes it appears and sometimes it doesn’t so that needs to be addressed.

When connecting the volume is mapped to current Android volume to avoid volume change.

I know that but that’s NOT what I mean, I am talking about the maximum level of the DAC which seems to be limited somehow, that situation doesn’t happen with UAPP, Fiio Music or Hiby Music.

Please download the log from here:

Symfonium log

On these two videos you can see what I mean about what Symphonium should do but it still doesn’t:

When I connect the DAC, the bottom notification appears but I dismiss it, then I open symfonium but the notification to get connected to the DAC never appears:

Symphonium popup

On this other video you can see what happens when I connect the DAC, where the bottom notification appears but I dismiss it, then I open UAPP and the notification to get connected always appears, this is what Symfonium must always do:

UAPP popup

I’ve been testing the app with the Hiby FC3 DAC and with all my DSD files and some don’t want to play, there is an error message when I attempt to play them, they are DSD128 in the DSF extension, I gathered a new log that you can download from here:

Symfonium with DSD.log

I also hear some “click” when I skip through songs, something I don’t hear with UAPP for example.

Upload those files to https://upload.symfonium.app

I uploaded the files but I don’t see how I can show you where they are, though I added a description in the text at the bottom.

I need the DSF files

The DSF files were uploaded to the link.

Update to beta 6 from the repo see changelog.

I imagine I can only update through Google Play, correct?

No obviously not correct

Ok, where can I find the APK, I’m lost, sorry.

Nevermind, I just found it.

@tolriq

It appears it is working correctly now with the Hiby DAC, all DSD files play and I don’t hear the “click” anymore.

As per the FiiO KA1, playback works now with any file, however, regarding the volume level of the DAC, I only see the volume level show in the screenshot below when I play DSD files but I don’t see it when I play PCM files and that’s exactly what I’ve been saying about the volume level, it should appear regardless the file format I play:

On the other hand, you must address what I explained in the videos, it is the correct way of how the app must request connection to the DAC.

Provide new proper logs …

There’s nothing I must do. You were insufferable last time don’t go that road again.

I apologize if you feel like I was giving you orders because that’s not my intention.

I’ve been testing another app where the exact issue happened and the developer was able to fix it so you can do it too.

I uninstalled it and re-installed the app and it appears the volume level shown in the screenshot now appears when I attempt to change the volume level when playing PCM files, however, the double popup notification SHOULD NOT appear when connecting the DAC but only the bottom notification (as long as there are more than one app with USB DAC support installed) and if I dismiss the bottom notification and open the app, the app’s popup to get connected to the DAC should appear, just like I showed you in the video.

Can you please fix that?

I uploaded a log while doing what’s shown in that video, I hope you can find the reason why the popup doesn’t appear.

The name of the file is “Symfonium DAC connection.log”.

Thanks.

Hello @Tolriq

I tested beta 7 and the popup notification now appears when I open the app after I dismiss the bottom notification as I explained but there is one additional situation I forgot about :man_facepalming::man_facepalming::man_facepalming::man_facepalming:

When I open the app and cancel or dismiss the popup notification, when I exit the app and return, the popup notification should appear again but it’s not doing it.

Steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Connect the DAC.

  2. The bottom notification appears but I tap anywhere on the screen to dismiss it.

  3. Open Symfonium.

  4. When the popup notification appears I tap on cancel or anywhere on the screen to dismiss it.

  5. Exit the app by pressing the back button or with a swipe gesture to remove it from memory.

  6. Open the app again, the popup notification should appear again.

It’s important to clarify that the popup notification will appear indefinitely when repeating steps 5 and 6 until I tap on OK to get connected.

I gathered an additional log which is already uploaded under the name “Symfonium beta 7.log”

Don’t ping … And no it should not by default as it’s absurd and bothering. But there’s an option to enable that in advanced settings …
