Artist Image - what am I doing wrong

This is my first post. I am a newbie and am using a Fiio M21 media player and trying to create artist images for each Artist. The Fiio M21 runs on Android 13 (I think).

Images for most artists appear automatically, but a few very popular artists, such as Alan Parsons, Allman Brothers, etc., do not appear.

I have included images for Alan Parsons as an example

This is what shows when I open the Artist Images

This is what shows when I click on Alan Parsons

I can see 6 albums and their Album Art inside the Alan Parsons folder

What am I doing wrong? How do I get the Artist Image to show?

Oddly, this only happens for artists.

Thanks.

Since I am permitted only 3 images per post, I figured I would add additional data in case it helps resolve this issue.

When i click on one of the albums (in this case Alan Parsons Essential) it says no items.

But when I play a file from the folder, the album art shows.

Even when I go back to the Artist page (showing all 6 albums), the track from Alan Parsons plays, and the artwork shows on my screen.

Lastly, I know you are all volunteers and are busy. So no hurry. I am a retired old man and can wait. I am happy to get any advice or help I can get.

Thank you again

For the artists that do have pictures, are they your own pictures or did the app pull them from the internet?

If they’re from the internet, sometimes it just misses an obvious person.

If you click the three-dots menu inside the Artist page, you can tap “Change local thumbnail” and set a picture manually.

Thank you, Celorien, for your quick response.

I ripped my most of my CDs using Exact Audio Copy in 2005 or so. I think the version was 0.95. The Flac files were generated using flac.exe downloaded from xiph.org. As per XIPH, “Flac has its own tagging system which is identical to that of Vorbis.” I do not know what Vorbis is, but I assume it is quite a common tagging software. I do not know if this system creates album art, but when I play the files on my PC using Apple iTunes or FooBar 2000, each artist and album has art associated with it. The art even showed on my Apple iPod 160 GB. However, when these iPods became unavailable, I got a Fiio M21.

Last night, I did manage to use “change local thumbnail” and set the picture manually for 2 artists (Alan Parsons and Allman Brothers), but I have close to 2TB of music, approximately 3,000 CDs across over 600 artists, and to do this manually for even 60 of artists (assuming only 60 have artist art missing) would take some doing, as I would have to scroll through 100s of artists as I try and tag artists starting with M-N-O through X-Y-Z.

Is there some way to do this automatically? Is there an application I can download on my PC that lets me access the FiiO M21 (which runs Android 13)?

Thanks

Sadly artist arts are not handled in the same way as album arts. For albums, there’s a bunch of ways to get the pictures to show up. Sounds like that’s already working fine for your library.

But for artists our options are pretty limited. As far as I know, we can only:

  1. let the app search the internet and find its own pictures to use

  2. set the picture for an artist manually

  3. set up “artist.nfo” files which are paired with the image files to use

Option 1 is the only automatic option, and is what you’ve probably already done. To check, you can go to Settings > Manage Media Providers. You’ll see something like “Local Device” with a three-dots menu button. Tap that, and choose Edit.

On this screen, one of the first options will be a toggle labeled “Scrape additional artists metadata.” With this setting enabled, the app will look for the artist pictures online. All you’d have to do is confirm changes and let the app “Sync” your files.

(Note that this grabs Biographies and other stuff from the internet too, not just pictures.)

I’m guessing it’s already on though, isn’t it? If so, all you can really do is Option 2–fill the holes manually, the way I’ve described earlier.

To make it a little easier, you can go to Library > Artists, and then tap the Filter button (looks like three, stacked lines in a triangle). Then at the bottom under Smart Filter, you can tap “Add rule” and under Artist, tap “Local Thumbnail” and then “is missing” and “Save.”

This should make it so that only the artists with no pictures appear in the list, so that you don’t have to go looking for them. But setting the pictures will still be manual. (If it didn’t work, try again but tap “Thumbnail” instead of “Local Thumbnail”.)

Option 3 is much more advanced and requires another software to set up easily… And in the end, it’s still pretty manual. (It can be done on a computer though.) I’ll link the doc page in an edit… (Linked here)

But it lets you drop the picture files (manually) into a very specific folder layout for the app to use. It also requires setting up some text files for each artist, but that can be done mostly automatically through a software called Kodi.

(Kodi can search for pics online too, but I don’t know if that will find anything that Symfonium didn’t already.)

It ends up being more work, but is more permanent than setting it through this app like in Option 2. (Since this way lets you keep a backup the folders once you’re done.)

Where do I find “Library”? Thanks.

However you normally get to your Artists list, I didn’t mean anything special.

Library is just the overall menu where you pick Artist view, or Albums, Tracks, etc.

(So the screen in your first screenshot. Filter button should be at the top.)

Filter button

Tap one of these

Set to “is missing” and then “Save”

Thanks. The Thumbnail is missing worked but the Local Thumbnail is missing did not.

However, even after adding thumbnails the list with “thumbnail missing” does not change. Do I have to re-scan the entire library or do something else?

There’s two types of thumbnails. When you add the pic manually, you are setting the Local thumbnail. So it makes sense that the list doesn’t change when you are filtering by regular Thumbnail missing.

You can add a second rule by doing the exact same steps as adding the first one. So that you have “Local Thumbnail” OR “Thumbnail” is missing.

That will stay updated with your changes. Remember to come back in this menu and clear the filters when you are done, so that you can see your music again!

Thanks. I tried this, but didn’t have much luck.

Thumbnail filter

Search with thumbail filter on

I noticed that, as I scrolled with the thumbnail filter off, the artists’ positions shifted by 1 position. So the filter must be doing something, just not what I am expecting it to do.

The other challenge is that for a few artists, the software can’t find any artwork, either when using “generate from tracks” or the “file picker”.

A lesser challenge is having to scroll a lot. I suspect that the FiiO M21 is not the best implementation of Android (ver 13).

Thank you for all your help.

My mistake, the filter should be set to ALL instead of ANY

Well it’s not magic

“Generate from tracks” is supposed to make a collage using the album arts for that artist.

“File picker” is just that–pick a file on your phone. You’ll have to manually download the artworks yourself for it to use.

The scrolling can’t really be helped. There’s a lot of folders and a small screen.

Not much more help I can give, sorry.

Thanks Celorien,

I think I need to reorganise the way music is stored on my PC to work with Android 13 (FiiO M21).

FooBar, iTunes, etc., are much more “intelligent” in that music is displayed as per the Artist tags. The FiiO M21 (Android 13) shows each folder, so if I have 5 folders for an Artist (this is true for classical music, where I have multiple folders for each composer). Let me first sort out the classical music collection and try again.

Thank you again.
