Issue description:
I’m pretty sure it used to, since that’s why I stayed away from it 
Tested in Library views as well as Home page’s “Favorite Artist” view. Fanart grid displayed the normal Artist thumb in both places, whereas the background/overlay styles do load the fanart.

Reproduction steps:
Place a fanart.png inside the local “Artist Info” folder
Set view to “Fanart Grid”
Navigate to said Artist
No fanart shown
Change view to e.g. Vertical Overlay
Fanart is shown
