Smart Playlists, group by <field>

Feature description:

Currently the smart playlists let you generate a track or album based playlist. Is it possible to let us create one based on other tags?

Problem solved:

I like to listen to album shuffle playlists and mostly the implementation is already spot on. However some of my albums, like the Beatles Super Deluxe are many, many discs long.
If I add the album name and disc number somewhere e.g. “Abbey Road - Disc 1”, to a tag, let’s say the comments, is it possible to group the playlist based on the comments tag so that Abbey Road disc 1 plays, then another random album/disc is played.

To get around this now, I’m renaming the albums to be ‘album name (Disc #)’ but this means my library looks cluttered with duplicates.

Brought benefits:

People who listen to album shuffle have the option to split larger albums/compilations when shuffling

Other application solutions:

Musicbee on windows has the ‘group by’ option on smart playlists.

You can choose to include just the specific tracks that meet your playlist criteria or to include all of the ‘group’ that these tracks belong to.
You then choose the group from any of the metadata fields

If you create a track smart playlist & then hit add rule. There are numerous tag fields you can use for smart playlists including comments. The ammount of items in that list you can use is honestly astonishing. One of my favorite things about this app.

Once your playlist is created I’m sure you can sort the whole thing by album which I think would achieve your goal

Hi, thanks for the suggestion but I don’t think that will do what I’m looking for.

The selection criteria is not my problem, it’s the grouping criteria.

In MusicBee, my smart playlist is fairly straightforward.

  1. Last played is greater than 60 days, or play counts is zero

  2. Genre is not Christmas

  3. Limit to 10 albums

  4. Group by comment. it’s this part that allows it to just select a single disc of a multi disc album as my comments contain ‘Album Artist-Album–Disc#’

This gives me a playlist of 10 random discs which helps break up some of the larger collections.

Ah. I’m with you

in short this is similar to windows explorer where you can sort music files alphabetically & then also group them by album.

I think comments might be a tougher field to work with (some people have much more random text in comments) but in your case that would work.

Sorting by album & then “grouping” by disc might still achieve what you are looking for

I’d also be curious if the disctitle could be used as a sorting / grouping field in my albums with large numbers of discs I use disctitles so I can more easily tell what I’m looking at
