Smart Crossfade does not trigger during automatic track transitions.
Smart Crossfade is enabled and waveform data is available, but the current track plays until its normal end and the next track starts normally at 0:00 without any overlap or fade.
I originally encountered the issue with 15.0.1. I also tested with Smart Crossfade disabled and a fixed 6-second crossfade, but no crossfade occurred either.
I have now updated to 15.1.0 Beta 4 because of the recent Smart Crossfade fixes, but Smart Crossfade still does not work.
Device type
Phone
Media provider
Subsonic (Open)
Steps to reproduce
Enable Smart Crossfade in Settings → Playback → Transitions.
Play tracks from a Navidrome library (tracks are also available in Symfonium’s offline cache).
Queue tracks from different albums and let playback transition automatically from one track to the next.
Observe that the current track plays until its normal end and the next track starts at 0:00 without a crossfade.
Additional information
The issue is reproducible after restarting Symfonium and also after updating from 15.0.1 to 15.1.0 Beta 4.
In the Beta 4 debug log, the next track appears to be prepared and its FLAC decoder is initialized before the current track ends. ReplayGain processing is also completed beforehand.
Nevertheless, the actual transition is logged as a regular AUTO_TRANSITION from the end position of the current track to position 0 of the next track. I could not find a Smart Crossfade being started before that transition.
Waveform/amplitude extraction also appears to work and waveform data has been cached.
As an additional test under 15.0.1, I disabled Smart Crossfade and configured a normal fixed 6-second crossfade. That did not crossfade either.
I have uploaded the Beta 4 debug log from within Symfonium using my forum username so it can be retrieved for this report.
Your logs show that the queue is still marked as album playback, which disables both smart and fixed crossfade. Adding songs from other albums to that queue can preserve this mode.
Please start a fresh queue using Play from Songs or a song playlist, then let two tracks transition automatically. If crossfade still fails, capture that test with debug logging enabled before starting playback.
Thanks, that was indeed the cause. I tested again by starting playback from a regular playlist, and smart crossfade works correctly there.
However, I think my actual use case might be worth considering:
I often navigate album artist > album > track just to find and start a specific track. I am not intending to listen to the album in sequence.
From that track I then start a Smart Flow (for example “Steady Vibes”), which adds matching tracks from different albums to the queue. At that point, from a user perspective, I have clearly left album playback and the queue has effectively become a generated mix/playlist.
However, as you explained, the queue apparently keeps its original “album playback” state, so both smart crossfade and fixed crossfade remain disabled.
I understand why crossfade is disabled while actually playing an album in sequence, especially for gapless albums. But once a Smart Flow takes over the queue and starts adding tracks from other albums, preserving album playback mode seems unintuitive.
Would it make sense for starting a Smart Flow - or another action that turns the queue into a mixed selection of tracks - to clear the album playback flag and enable the normal transition/crossfade behaviour?
So the original issue is resolved for me, but perhaps this could be considered as a small behaviour/UX improvement.
Thanks, makes sense. I can imagine there are quite a few edge cases around preserving gapless album playback while modifying the queue.
Good to know it’s already tracked as a feature request. At least I now understand why crossfade wasn’t working in my case. Thanks for looking at the logs!
