Multichannel tracks render TV devices unable to play stereo tracks

Issue description

I discovered the following issue on Jellyfin by the end of last year though I though it was an issue exclusive to that app but given I see it also on Symfonium I see that it’s a global issue with Exoplayer though I wonder if it can be fixed directly on the app or not.

When I play a multichannel audio track with 5.1 or 7.1 channels, the app plays it correctly, no issue here.

The problem lies when I attempt to play an stereo track after I played a multichannel track, where the device is unable to output sound while the song is playing and the issue extends to any app installed on the device, for example, audio is not output from YouTube anymore.

If I play again any of those multichannel tracks, they output sound with no issues.

The issue can be “fixed” depending on the device:

  • On devices with a passthrough audio option (such as the Homatics Box R 4K Plus), I have to reboot the device to fix it.

  • On devices where the Dolby MS12 software stack is permanent (such as the Google TV Streamer), the issue gets fixed by force-stopping the app, there is no need to reboot the device.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open the app.
  2. Search for a multichannel track and play it.
  3. Search for an stereo track and play it, audio won’t output but playback continues
  4. Search for the same multichannel track or any different track and sound outputs.

I searched existing issues first

It appears the issue lies specifically with the Homatics box as commented on this ticket at the AndroidX GitHub site.
