# Feature description:

Half star rated songs info would be stored in symfonium database instead writing or overwriting files metadata

### Problem solved:

It’s not a problem but this can helps to keep more organized people music collection/library

### Brought benefits:

Many people would love a local music player with this feature

### Other application solutions:

&nbsp;
Plexamp have this feature, they stored all data in their servers I guess but i prefer Symfonium over plexamp cuz plexamp lacks on synced lyrics page, the multi artist feature and Symfonium is much more customizable (thanks for that, you are doing a great job)
&nbsp;

### Additional description and context:

&nbsp;
I hope you can read well my request, English is not my native language

Why do you need half stars over just full stars that are already preset.

Half stars would let us rating with “accuracy” our music library just like musicbee or plexamp, I would prefer rate starting from 3 stars then 3.5, 4, 4.5 and 5.
Why people would have 1 or 2 stars songs in their libraries? Searching in multiple forums from different music players and music forums I think many people will be happy with this feature.

</div>

So you want to use 5 rating steps for your songs, but it should not be 1-2-3-4-5 because 1 and 2 look bad? 😉

</div>

It’s not about looking good or bad , it’s about organization, with a half star rating system people will have 10 options to rate their songs instead just 5, it would be more “accurate” than the actual full stars system

Half stars have been recently implemented. Is there a setting to disable them and use the previous 1 to 5 stars ratings?

It is in Settings → Database.

After reading your suggestion I went to the database settings but I did not find any option for that.
Then I updated the Symfonium app and the initial changelog mentions that as a new option.
Splinter, thank you for your reply.
And also, thank you Tolriq for adding it as fast (and the amazing app, of course)

I’m new to Symfonium and found this support topic as I am looking to have only full stars and not half stars but I’m currently running version 13.4.0 and can’t find Settings \> Database.

I did find some settings related to Ratings in Settings, Interface, now playing screens but not option for half/full stars. Is this setting hiding somewhere else in newer versions?

It’s a sub menu of advanced as per the changelogs.

Thanks, Tolriq. I found it in Settings \> Advanced \> Database and then can toggle Half star rating on or off. Much appreciated and getting this great music player dialed in to work just the way I like it and it’s a great app with so many features. Keep up the great work.

Follow up and new bug I’ve found is with Half Stars turned off. If the app closes completely and I open it back up and try you rate something then marking stars doesn’t work at all. I have to go back in to database setting and toggle on and back off for it to work again.

Also only pressing the right half of the star makes full star work. If I press the left half it does nothing. I’ve increased the display size in settings. Interface, Now playing screens, Expanded player (portrait), Rating bar style = Large, and Scale factor = 1.3. But that doesn’t seem to matter as I’ve change it back and still happens but smaller area to touch.

Thanks

Is there any way to export the song ratings from Symfonium?
Since they can’t be synched with navidrome I’d like some other way of accessing my ‘half-star’ ratings from outside of Symfonium.

There’s two main methods afaik:

1) _The complicated way:_ write a script to extract the ratings from an app backup. The userdata is contained in a JSON file

* * *

2) _The “easy” way:_ Set up Smart Playlists for each rating value that you care about. Whenever you want to backup the data, you can then “Copy as Normal Playlist,” go to the newly created playlist, and then “Export” it.

This will create an \*.m3u8 file with all the songs for that rating. Finally you can import this file into a tag editor (I know Mp3tag supports this) and batch update the ratings tag.
