Display switched off automatically (Symfonium plays on)

Issue description:

Hello dear support team,

I have a strange problem:
On my phone (Samsung S24 Ultra, latest firmware) while playing a song the display first dims and then switches off (I assume according to the timeout settings in android).
But I set “Keep screen on” to “Always” but this setting is not honoured…
I double checked my app settings in Android:
Symfonium power setting is set to “unrestricted” and Mobile Data Usage is enabled for background usage…
What else can I do to keep screen on while Symfonium is running in foreground?
By the way the music plays on after screen is switched off…

Any help/hint is appreciated very much!

Kind regards

Chris

The playback starts because the OS sends a BT connection event and you have enabled the option for that.

For the keep screen on, in what screen are you ? This does not work in the settings pages.

Hi Tolriq,

normally I am in the player mode with cover-display and controls…

I just tried to reproduce this behaviour and astonishingly the screen stayed on… this time…

The “switch off” seems only to happen when listening to music in my car… (bluetooth connection / Audi MMI / no android auto interface)

While playing music via phone-speaker or earphones (bluetooth) the screen stays on…

Very strange…

While searching for the reason I came along a setting (I think it was in bluetooth settings) declaring the car audio bluetooth connection as “other” (in german “Sonstiges’) not as “speaker” or “headphone”…

Might this be the reason why the screen switches off?

Thank you for your help!

Kind regards

Chris

Symfonium set the flags, what the OS do is OEM shenanigans.

A quick ask to chatGPT confirm that Samsung have special handling for BT to cars for safety and optimizations.

Not sure how you can workaround that.

Hi Tolriq,

I could make a further test and it confirms my assumption:

When I change the audio device type for the Audi MMI connection in the android bluetooth settings from “other” to “speaker” the screen stays on…

So it seems to be something between Samsung phone and car bluetooth connection…

By the way this change does not interfere with the car multimedia display… title and play time etc. are displayed in the usual way on the car display!

So I think it is safe to keep this setting (audio device type as “speaker”) and everything works as expected!

Hopefully this thread will find its way to your knowledge base / forum and will help other Samsung users to adjust their settings!

Thank you for your excellent help!

Hello Tolriq,

unfortunately the above post (switching the multimedia device type to speaker) did not bring the solution…

The behaviour of “screen switching off” seems to be undetermined…and is still present! :slightly_frowning_face:

I dwelled in deeper:

And it seems like the screen fades out when two apps are set to keep the screen on…kind of 1+1=>0…

Is it possible that symfonium toggles a kind of “keep screen on”-button, without checking it’s state first?

Because when I disable the “keep screen on”-button in the other app (automation app) the screen stays on while using symfonium…
Actually I did not check the other way round…I will do a check next time I use the car audio system…

Kind regards

Chris

Again the app does not check anything, it set the flag.

The OS decide to respect it or not. Samsung does not when connected to a car. There’s nothing I can do from the app side.
