Once the speaker has been chosen for chromecasting music, and the handoff occurs, does the app still retain control over playing the music?
As well, when the music session has ended, does the Chromecast connection automatically terminate or does it have to be manually ended?

Yes. Once casting starts, you can still use Symfonium on your phone to control playback, including pause, skip, seek and volume. Since the music is stored on your phone, the speaker also needs to be able to reach the phone while playing.
By default, finishing the queue stops playback but does not automatically disconnect the Cast session. To disconnect manually, open the output picker and select Local device. If you want that to happen automatically when you stop playback or the queue ends, enable Stop casting on stop in the speaker’s settings in the output picker.
So the casting handoff is different than let’s say YouTube, where you can actually turn your phone off and the session will continue. In this instance, the phone must remain on and within the Wi-Fi network in order for the music to continue playing if I understand correctly.
As well, I assume that if casting is not terminated at the end of a music playing session, it could drain the battery of the phone.
The alternative, fewer steps, would be to simply play the music with a Bluetooth connection although there are some drawbacks there as well compared to chromecasting.
