Android TV: D-pad focus indicator has very low contrast and is difficult to see

Feature description

On the Android TV version of Symfonium, the visual indicator showing which control currently has D-pad focus can be very difficult to see.

I would like either:

a higher-contrast default focus indicator for the TV interface, or

a theme setting that allows the D-pad focused state color/background to be configured independently.

Problem solved

When navigating Symfonium with a TV remote, the item that currently has D-pad focus is indicated by a subtle dark/gray rounded background. On my TV this has very little contrast against the surrounding dark interface, making it difficult to tell where the focus has moved.

This is specifically about the focused item while navigating with the D-pad, not the currently selected/active item.

For example, in the left navigation menu:

I can make the currently selected item very obvious by changing secondaryContainer in the custom theme. I have tested this with bright red and it works well.

However, when I move the D-pad to another item, the focus indicator remains a low-contrast dark gray background.

Changing outlineVariant does not appear to affect this focus indicator.

I have also tried a bright seed color, Vibrant theme and the highest contrast setting without resolving the focus visibility.

So there appears to be a distinction between the theme property controlling the selected/active state and whatever controls the D-pad focused state.

Brought benefits

A more visible focus indicator would:

Make remote-control navigation much easier on a television viewed from normal seating distance.

Improve accessibility for users who have difficulty distinguishing low-contrast UI elements.

Make it immediately apparent which action will occur when the remote’s OK/Select button is pressed.

I found another support request concerning low-contrast playback controls in Android’s notification center/lock screen. However, that appears to be a different issue because those controls and their colors are provided by the Android OS.

The issue I’m reporting occurs inside Symfonium’s Android TV interface itself while navigating with the remote.

If the focused-state color is already exposed somewhere in the custom theme editor, I would appreciate knowing which property controls it. Otherwise, a dedicated TV focus indicator color/contrast setting—or simply a stronger default focus treatment—would be very helpful.

I can provide screenshots showing the difference between the clearly visible selected/active item and the much less visible D-pad focused item.

Not a solution to your problem, but you can at least control the highlight color. See my post here:

Thank you, @Celorien ! I will try this. I really like Symforium but it is impossible to use on Google TV.
