Feature description
[Album Library Display] Please add a sorting option based on folder path names
Hello everyone!
I’m posting on this forum from Japan. As my English isn’t very good, I’m using DeepL to translate my post. Please bear with me if the content isn’t entirely clear.
I’m a big fan of Symfonium. It’s incredibly useful for listening to music stored on my NAS when I’m at home. The UI and usability are very sophisticated, and it runs smoothly and efficiently – I’m truly grateful to the Symfonium developers and use it every day.
Summary of the request: I would like to see the option to sort the album list by folder path added to the sorting methods.
Problem solved
Background to the request:
However, there is just one issue that causes me considerable difficulty in terms of usability when displaying all my albums as a music library with thumbnails.
As I have 400GB of music data (FLAC) stored on my NAS, when I display all albums as a music library using thumbnails based solely on music tag information, the current version of Symfonium sorts them by album name. Whilst this behaviour is, of course, quite standard, sorting by album name means that the 400GB of music on my NAS is displayed as a jumbled array of thumbnails, with no regard for genre or other categories. For example, as sorting by album name arranges them alphabetically starting with ‘B’, the albums get mixed up regardless of genre. Furthermore, even within the same composer’s collection—such as Beethoven’s works—different album titles result in ‘Beethoven’ appearing scattered throughout the thumbnail list.
To avoid this haphazard display of album thumbnails, I use an application called ‘TauonMusicPlayer’ on my Linux PC to display thumbnails of all albums by folder path. This is because the music folder on the NAS is organised with separate folders for each album. Furthermore, the names of the individual album folders within each are saved with a number to identify the genre and a word for self-identification (mainly the artist’s name).
By doing this, as the sorting is based on the folder path names, all albums are naturally organised according to the genre identification numbers first and foremost. Secondly, as I include the names of my favourite main artists or composers in the folder names, Beethoven-related albums, for example, are grouped together and displayed consecutively under ‘Beethoven’ when viewing the album thumbnails. Once displayed in this consecutive order, the official album titles provided by the publisher are shown in lower case within the thumbnail list via tag information. In other words, the system is designed so that even if the album titles differ, they are neatly organised and displayed based on the folder path.

Specific description of the issue:
As Symfonium currently cannot do this, when sorting by album name and browsing the thumbnail list of the entire library, I am forced to constantly go back and forth between the beginning and end of the list whenever I try to find the same Beethoven album. This method of sorting, which relies solely on music tag information, is extremely inconvenient.
Request:
Therefore, to ensure I can continue using Symfonium for a long time to come, I would like to request the addition of folder sorting by folder path name, whilst simultaneously enabling the display of album names based on tag information rather than folder names.
