Add Back Button Behavior Customization | Android TV

Feature description

At the Interface > Navigation and media start it could be added some options to add this feature.

  • Back Button Redirection (Now playing by Default) dropdown list
    • Home, Albums, Tracks, Album Artists, Playlists…
  • Stop Back Button from going to Home Launcher checkable option

Problem solved

Pressing the back button navigates through the previous pages until it reaches the Now Playing Screen then pressing it again redirects to the Home Launcher.
This doesn’t feel organic as the Android TVs already have a Home Launcher Button.
As well as Now Playing Screen being the last stop takes away some control that the Home Screen could take more advantage of.

Brought benefits

This would add more possibilities for themes in Android TV.
For example a Single Page would be available by hiding all tabs and placing the tabs in the Home Screen (something already possible but it gets locked at the Now Playing Screen because of the original behavior). This would make the app feel more TV native.

Other application solutions

Some applications like Netflix disables the back button at their last stop, in this case it is at the Profile Screen. Other applications have their last stop before going to Home Launcher at the page where you can get anywhere in the app Home Screen / Settings Screen.

I don’t have access to the TV build to check rn, but at least on Phone this is controlled by your own settings. The first item selected in Main navigation entries is what the app returns to as the final page.

Being able to control that would definitely be nice though. I’ve avoided moving my Home tab for exactly this reason.
